Students Want Project-Based Learning—AI Makes It Possible
The newsletter series every educator needs—turn student projects into self-directed, skill-building experiences with AI.
Hey there,
Most project-based learning (PBL) efforts fall apart not because they’re a bad idea—but because they’re too hard to manage.
This is a podcast overview of the entire newsletter in case that you prefer to listen to it in this format. This podcast overview was created with NotebookLM.
For years, I watched teachers burn out trying to implement projects that were supposed to inspire students, only to get bogged down in logistics. Students struggled too—unsure how to start, plan, research, or work as a team. That all changes with AI. In this newsletter series, I’ll show you how simple AI prompts can turn PBL into a smooth, student-driven experience that builds the very skills our students need for the real world.
This series was inspired by a line in The Atlantic’s recent article, “College Students Have Already Changed Forever.” A student says:
“Instead of being required to take tests and write in-class essays, they want to do more project-based learning—with assignments that emulate the real world.”
That quote hit home. It confirmed what I’ve seen throughout my two decades as a computer teacher and as the founder of Project Pals: students crave real-world relevance—but they need help developing the skills to get there.
Here’s the problem:
Most PBL fails because students don’t know how to lead a project, and teachers don’t have the time or tools to teach project management, teamwork, or research skills.
But what if students had a smart guide by their side at every step?
That’s where AI comes in.
In this newsletter series, I’ll show you how to use AI as a student companion—not a shortcut. With carefully designed prompts, students can:
Develop their own driving questions
Set project goals and break down the work
Decide how to divide tasks among teammates
Learn to conduct real research
Create task lists and timelines
Select the best format to present their work
All with AI nudging them in the right direction—without doing the work for them.
This approach puts students in the driver’s seat, builds confidence, and prepares them for the collaborative, problem-solving world they’re heading into. And for teachers? It makes PBL manageable. You don’t have to be a project manager or an AI expert to make this work.
In the coming weeks, I’ll share a complete series of student-facing prompts—ready to use in your classroom. Each one designed to activate students' cognitive skills, guide their project development, and make your job easier.
If you’re experimenting with PBL, looking for ways to build student independence, or tired of failed project attempts—this series is for you.
